Tired of boring documents? Google’s NotebookLM has launched a major update, using Gemini’s latest Nano Banana image generation technology to turn your notes into vivid videos. There’s also a new “Brief” format to help you get the main points in seconds!

Have you ever had this experience? Faced with a report full of jargon, a thick research paper, or dense meeting minutes, you just feel a blur in front of your eyes and your brain is about to go on strike. In the age of information explosion, digesting this content is a major challenge in itself.

Fortunately, there is a smart tool called NotebookLM that can help us understand the uploaded data. Now, this tool has become more fun and powerful! NotebookLM has launched a major upgrade to its “Video Overviews” feature, which can instantly transform your notes and documents into videos with narration.

The core of this update is a technology that sounds very interesting - Nano Banana.

What is Nano Banana? Not Just a Banana

Don’t rush to the fruit stand just yet. Nano Banana is actually the nickname for the latest image generation technology from Google’s powerful Gemini model. When you use it in NotebookLM, it will automatically generate practical, on-topic, and beautifully illustrated images based on the data you upload.

What does this mean? It means that the resulting video overviews no longer just “inform” you of the document’s content, but truly help you “understand” and “remember” it. Boring text is transformed into narrative and visual images, and the learning effect is naturally very different.

After this update, video overviews will automatically use one of six new visual styles, making each video full of surprises:

  • Watercolor: Artistic, suitable for soft, emotional themes.
  • Papercraft: Three-dimensional and playful, making complex concepts accessible.
  • Anime: Lively Japanese anime style, adding vitality to your content.
  • Whiteboard: Just like a teacher highlighting key points in class, clear and concise.
  • Retro Print: A bit nostalgic, suitable for historical or classic themes.
  • Heritage: Elegant style, adding a त्यात a touch of solemnity to your content.

Two Viewing Modes, Deep Learning or Quick Browsing? You Choose!

We all know that sometimes we need to delve into every detail of a document, but other times, we just want to quickly grasp the main points. To meet these two very different needs, NotebookLM now offers two video formats for you to choose from.

  • Explainer: This is a structured and comprehensive video format. It will provide a systematic and in-depth explanation based on your data sources to help you thoroughly understand the topic.
  • Brief: This is a brand new format that is short and sweet. It will present the core ideas of the document in the most concise way, allowing you to grasp the key points in less time.

So, which one should you choose? It all depends on your current needs. If you need to prepare for an exam or do in-depth research, choose the “Explainer” mode; if you just want to quickly review before a meeting, then the “Brief” mode is your good helper.

Four Simple Steps to Easily Create Your Own Exclusive Video

Seeing this, are you also eager to try it out? Don’t worry, the process is very simple.

  1. Select Source: In NotebookLM, select the notes or documents you want to generate a video from.
  2. Start Customizing: After clicking the “Video Overview” button, you will see a pencil icon on the video preview tile. Click on it.
  3. Adjust Settings: Here, you can choose the desired format (Explainer or Brief), visual style, and even give more specific instructions to customize the video content. For example, you can enter: “Focus only on the cost analysis part of the business plan,” or “Turn these recipes into easy-to-understand videos, and emphasize the preparation time and cooking steps.”
  4. Relax and Wait: After the settings are complete, you can relax. While the video is being generated, you can continue to browse other content in your notebook without any delay.

What is the significance of this update?

This update is not just about adding a few new features. It represents a trend - transforming dense, complex information into dynamic, easy-to-understand multimedia content, making knowledge acquisition more accessible. When we can learn in a more intuitive and interesting way, the absorption effect will naturally be better.

This new video overview feature will be rolled out to all Pro users in supported languages this week, and will be available to all users in the coming weeks. Ready to bring your notes to life? Go try it out!
